Today I tried to move one of my websites to a new domain. I ftped the data to the new hosting account without a problem, however creating a new MySQL database was a bit tricky. Remember opening phpMyAdmin on a fresh hosting account will not give you the option of creating a new database, because you have not created any database on that account as yet and also have not created a user for the database. Here is how the phpMyAdmin will look like in a freshly created hosting account:
You see the “create new database” option gives a warning “No Priviliges” under it. Now what you do, your “Create new MySQL database using phpMyAdmin” doesn’t give you any clue here! Well you go to your control panel home page and under “Databases” you will see the option of “MySQL Databases”, click on that and create a new database.
The database you just created will be displayed in the left hand column of phpMyAdmin now. Click on the DB you just created. On top menu select import, browse for your Database backup file and hit “Go” . Here you go, you old DB is imported to your new hosting account.

October 19th, 2009Salman Mehmood of ApniISP.com fame passed away today. Salman was suffering from Thalassemia Major. He was a brave young man, who made a good use of his short life. He had the will, the courage and talent to inspire others. I believe he knew he had a short time here, so made most out it.

Salman Mehmood worked for a US based company called Directors Advantage during night hours. He was very popular among Pakistani bloggers, prayers for Salman can be found on most updated Pakistani blogs here and here. Reading those blogs you can judge his popularity among bloggers and Pakistani website owners. He was a good PHP programmers. Salman founded an organization for awareness and eradication of Thalassemia called Fight Against Thalassemia Foundation (FAiTh).
He appeared on ATV Kaun Hoga Naujawanon Ka Wazeer-e-Azam, and gave a motivating speech for awareness of thalassemia and proposed that a bill should be passed in National Assembly to eradicate thalassemia from Pakistan.
Here is the translation of his speech on ATV.
“I want to tell you about the disease I have since childhood called Thalassemia Major, in this disease the patient needs blood transfusion every month, additionally to take extra iron out of his body patient also has to take iron chelation injections for as much as eight hours per day. It’s a very painful disease, and I want to eradicate this disease from Pakistan. Every year 6000 kids are born with thalassemia in Pakistan. I want to make sure that no other kid or family has to suffer what me and my family OR thousands of thalassemics like me had to suffer. There is a very simple solution to this, countries like Cyprus, Iran have enforce prevention laws for these diseases by requiring related medical tests before Marriage. We can have that kind of law passed here too, and it’s under discussion in parliament as well. So I want that this bill to be passed and Pre-marital tests to become required.”

How Pakistani’s are finding businesses online.

September 9th, 2009I remember asking my class fellow about an algorithm, that where he found it, he said “Google”. I was like “What?”. That was back in 2001. He educated me about a website called Google, used widely by college students to search for stuff on the internet. Well, that was my first introduction to Google.

Now a days I use Google for knowledge, for finding businesses, buying products and a lot more. Today I searched for the term “Solar energy in Pakistan” on Google, because I wanted to purchase a solar water geyser for my house. The first company website that was on top 2nd position was Pakistan Solar Power. Pathetic website! HTML errors, poor English, poor graphics. Google page rank 1, still it comes on top 2 on Google for a competitive keyword. These guys can build an empire using this advantage. That is why I say that there is enormous potential for professional companies to take advantage of internet in Pakistan.

The second website that ranked at number 3 for the keyword “Solar power Pakistan” was solarsystem.pk. Again it was by some solar power hobbyist, trying to educate people about solar power. The guy was not selling any products.
I personally believe that there is huge potential for solar energy products in Pakistan, the buyers of these products are educated and very much motivated to buy these products. They can even wait for a product to be shipped from China, because they really believe that solar energy is one of the solutions for energy crisis in Pakistan. These educated people have internet as the most powerful tool, using which they want to connect with the sellers, and what do they find while searching? These websites, whose owners are not even serious enough to format their content and correct English.
It is my personal belief that the most successful solar energy company in Pakistan will be the one with the most powerful internet presence.
